Description

La lumière du phare d’Alexandrie fait naufrager les papillons de ma jeunesse…

This is the Pharos, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, in the way it was almost 2000 years ago. The roman ship is called Navis Oneraria, a merchant boat used to bring goods to the Urbs, Rome. This one is going to Eternal City, carrying grain from the fertile Egypt. I try this time with this picture to be the most accurate I could. This place really did exist, I couldn’t do what I wanted, and so I did a lot of research. The Pharos, as you may know, was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. With his 135 meters high, it was quite a sight to behold!

As always, Corel Painter 8 was used, with some Photoshop CS for minor effects. Two weeks of work.

I see you are a new member, what a great way to begin!!! I especially like the reflection of the tower in the water. My only criticism is the white swan head clashes with the rest of the ship's design. Otherwise, great job!!!

little confused by the windows on the lower shaded side of the lighthouse... they're angled funny... but then again everything else is angled RIGHT! So I almost think the angle is intentional... like with a staircase inside maybe?

either way its +9 work

Thanks everyone! It took a hell of a lot to find how to reply to you, hahem. Aniway, about the swan: well, almost all roman merchant boats had this swan on it. It's in fact the end of the stern. You can see such swans in ancient mosaic. Kind of odd seeing one here, isnt'it? About the strange looking windows of the Pharos: yes, it's because the Paros was a huge stair case itself, so the windows followed the shape of it. I initially drew them straight, but further searches about the Pharos of Alexandria demonstrates me that windows were like that.

When I think such lightouse really existed... I have to put it on drawing.

Beautiful colors and lighting. Great job on the reflection too. The smoke (is that smoke?) looks scribbled and unpolished compared to the rest, but everything else is so well done that it hardly matters much.

All in all, very impressive!

My french is rusty, did you say... "The light of the alexandria headlight done with the butterflies of my youth…"???

I think this was a great period pc executed in an amazing fashion. You should be proud of this work.
