Description
A photograph of the past. With Modus Vivendi, I wanted to depict the roman way of life: bathing on thermae like those ones was certainly one of the most important aspects of the daily life in those days. You can see those fictional thermae (roman baths), but historically quite accurate: they could have done it. I used a lot of references, mainly those done by XIX century architect Viollet le Duc, as he reconstructed in pictures the ancient Baths of Caracalla (early III century). Those thermae are not as impressive as the Caracalla’s ones, but we should think that those characters you see here lived essentially on roman province!

This shows great draftsmanship but tonally it's a little drab....you should check out the work of the victorian artist Alma Tadema who's ersatz classical paintings fairly burst with light and bright colour to the point where you feel the need to squint to protect your eyes.

I do know really really well Sir Alma Tadema, and I also know the main crits that contemporean fellow academicians gave to him: "your characteres lacks of life".
What I tryed to accomplish here, it's to make "alive" ancient Rome, I do know that the combination of my modern style of drawing characters could clash whith ancient architecture, but in another hand... why not?
Thanks for the tips about the feet and the coloured shadows
